During noon hour, the kids would walk up to the hill above the Nelson farm and slide down to the center bridge. Lunch was as long as they needed to climb the hill back to the school. slide.

West Barnet School

Late 40’s early 50’s:

Teacher Katie Page (one of the best, if not, the best, teacher I ever had). I remember when I was in the big room (5-8) that a kid was digging in his desk, head under the desk top, picking at something stuck in the seam. Who knows how long it had been there, but it was a dynamite cap which detonated.stick of dynamite and it blew up. Katie called to the teacher in the little room (1-4), Mrs. Hutton, to watch us students. She grabbed the injured boy and drove him to the hospital. There was no waiting for an ambulance! He lost several fingers.

There was a turkey pasture next the school yard, after the farmer stopped raising turkeys we used to play tag at recess on the turkey roosts that were near the schoolyard fence.

We used to get a Christmas Tree in the woods for the school. The teacher asked the 7th and 8th grade boys to go cut a tree down in the woods. She expected us to be gone an hour and we were gone all afternoon. We found a 20 foot tree and it was so big, we had to keep cutting off the truck, a few feet here, four feet there!

When I was growing up, there were the five schools. There was very little interaction between the schools when I was a student. The 8th grade graduation was at the town hall, at the rehearsal was the first time that I had met some of my peers from the other schools.

8th grade graduation has always been a big deal here in Barnet.

The New School

Harold Dunbar was instrumental in choosing the location for the new school. He had tremendous foresight.

Bill Graves wrote the grant application in the mid-eighties that paid for the recreational field and concession stand area. Gordon Goss did staking and construction supervision for the field. Albert Goslant did the construction. All the material for the project was on site, so only bulldozing and grading needed. The critical part of the grading was the soccer field so the center of the field is higher than the perimeter of the field. This has always allowed for superb drainage. An irrigation system was installed as the field was put in by the contractor, Albert Goslant. There are irrigation valves along the parking lot side of the field, close to where the bleachers sit, that were installed to provide summer irrigation to keep the fields in superb shape for the conditioning and use of Barnet athletes. The more labor intensive parts of this project were performed by the Caledonia Work Camp. The back-stop for the baseball field was Chris Goss’s Eagle Scout Project (1989, before. The dugouts were built by Three River’s League many years later (2006/7/8?).

It was a huge let-down for the 8th graders (Andy Goss was one of them - 1989) that they were not able to attend the new school and graduate from it. The students were given an opportunity to graduate in the school and they unanimously shared that they did not want this. Since they did not have an opportunity to attend, they wanted to graduate in the Town Hall as all their classmates had done. The first 8th grade class to attend and graduate was in 1990..

Gordon Goss other stories...

Grandfather bought the Red Farm in 1905. It was already built. He bought it from the Brocks. If you go out Katie Larney’s Rd. there is a barn (house burnt) on the left. That’s where my grandfather grew up.

West Barnet School

Gordon Goss 03/05/10

Food

Barnet 6th graders are interested in learning about the food experiences of former students and teachers at Barnet School.
